Many people fear going to the dentist and resort to bad dental advice from non-professionals as an alternative. Unfortunately, following this advice can negatively impact your teeth and gums. Here are 3 pieces of bad anecdotal “advice” and how to correct them.

Brushing Teeth

  1. Replace a Toothbrush with Your Finger
Using your finger to brush your teeth, which sometimes happens when you forget to bring a toothbrush on vacation, is not going to be as effective for cleaning your teeth as using a toothbrush. In fact, it’s actually the toothbrush that is mostly responsible for cleaning your teeth and gums, not the toothpaste. The brush is designed to do what your finger cannot: to remove plaque that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

  2. Mints Work As Well As Brushing
While mints can help freshen your breath and make your mouth feel cleaner, they cannot fight tooth decay. Sensible alternatives to toothpaste, if you are trying to avoid fluoride, are baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. There are also fluoride-free toothpaste brands sold in the organic sections of supermarkets.

  3. Only See a Dentist for Toothaches
Some people put off seeing dentists until they experience pain. But even before you ever feel pain in your mouth, it’s possible to develop serious tooth decay and gum disease. That can be a costly mistake since pain may indicate you need a root canal, which becomes very expensive if you don’t have dental insurance.

It’s better to see a dentist every six months for a cleaning and checkup to make sure you don’t have cavities or other problems. The best way to avoid expensive dental visits is to take care of your teeth on a daily basis and regularly see a dentist who makes you feel comfortable and can professionally monitor your progress.
